At approximately 3:00 am on the Great Feast of Theophany, a longtime member of the Western American Diocese and cleric, Archpriest Ioan Comanescu, reposed in the Lord.

Father Ioan is survived by his widow, Matushka Efthemia, and their four sons and their daughter-in-law.

He was ordained to the deaconate for the Western American Diocese at Holy Virgin Cathedral in 2001.

In 2007 Father Ioan was ordained to the priesthood at Protection of the Holy Virgin Church in Palo Alto, California, and served there as the second priest. Father was well-known throughout the Bay Area and Sacramento, as he zealously labored as a substitute priest in many parishes of the Western American Diocese over the years.

Father Ioan had great faith, by which he lived. His interactions were clear and he exemplified Christ our God’s teaching: “But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil” (Matthew 5:37). Yet, it must be noted that Father John, though serious at times, out of love was also always cheerful and kind to all. Given that He Who has dominion over life and death has taken Father Ioan to Himself on the Great Feast of Theophany, truly the words of Holy Apostle Paul apply to him: “Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith” (Hebrews 13:7).

In addition to his clerical and pastoral responsibilities, he also held down a secular job as an architect to provide for his family.

In 2020 Father John was elevated to the dignity of Archpriest for his faithful service to the Holy Church.
